This book celebrates one of the foremost Byzantinists, Paul Magdalino. It consists of 25 chapters by peers, friends and former students. The chapters reflect Magdalinoâs own research interests, most notably Constantinople itself, and span from late antiquity to the modern world.
Particular themes within the book are the topography and monuments of Constantinople, relations between Byzantium and the West, the recasting of Byzantium in the âDark Ageâ, and literary culture and society under the Macedonian and Komnenian dynasties. The volume is not just a celebration of Magdalinoâs work but an important contribution to the study of Byzantine history and culture.

Shaun Tougher is Professor of Late Roman and Byzantine History at Cardiff University. He has a a Ph.D. on the Byzantine Emperor Leo VI (886-912) from the University of St Andrews (1994). He works on Byzantine political and social history.
