As a first monography, this thesis analyzes somniloquy (sleep talking) as a type of communication within dramatic texts. The corpus is composed of works by the authors William Shakespeare, Denis Diderot, Heinrich von Kleist, Eugène Scribe and Richard Wagner. By using the method of close reading, interactions between awake and sleeping protagonists are examined.
