In 550 Dokumenten spiegelt sich das Regierungshandeln Otto von Bismarcks in den Jahren 1886/87. Der Siebzigjährige agierte im dritten Jahrzehnt an der Seite des inzwischen neunzigjährigen Wilhelm I. Bismarcks politische und private Schreiben zeugen von einem ungebrochenen Eifer.
In auÃenpolitischer Hinsicht forderten ihn neue koloniale Herausforderungen ebenso wie die fast schon traditionelle Kriegsgefahr im Osten und Westen, der er ein letztes Mal mit einem (geheimen) Bündnis zu begegnen suchte. Innenpolitisch blieb er sich im Kampf gegen die Sozialdemokratie treu, leitete aber auch das Ende des Kulturkampfes ein. Zu bekannten Schlagworten wie âDoppelkriseâ, âLombardierungsverbotâ oder âSeptennatswahlenâ erlaubt der vorgelegte Band auf der Grundlage von bisher zu 75 Prozent ungedrucktem Material eingehendere Analysen.

The volume "Schriften 1886-1887" presented here is the seventh volume of the "Neue Friedrichsruher Ausgabe". This edition of Otto von Bismarck's writings, speeches and conversations replaces the "Gesammelten Werke" published between 1924 and 1935 - soon to be called the "Friedrichsruher Ausgabe".
The "Neue Friedrichsruher Ausgabe" contains a large number of new, previously unprinted documents from before and after 1871. At the same time, the selection of documents takes into account topics and questions that had not yet come into the focus of historical interest decades ago. A foreword, which precedes each volume of the series, informs about the establishment of the edition and the specific selection problems.
The "Neue Friedrichsruher Ausgabe" no longer distinguishes between "Political Writings" and "Letters". Since this separation can be considered problematic with regard to many testimonies anyway, letters as well as the authoritative documents from Bismarck's writing on foreign policy in the years between 1871 and 1890, both previously unprinted and printed, are also published in the "Schriften" section. It is planned to first present the writings from the years of the Reich Chancellorship in eight volumes. Subsequently, the revision of the writings from the period up to 1871 as well as the section "Conversations" and "Speeches" will be initiated.
