Menschliche Praxis ist kontingent. Wir können das Gelingen unserer Vollzüge nicht nur durch unsere Vermögen sicherstellen. Gelingen hat immer auch Widerfahrnischarakter.
Will man dieses Phänomen ernst nehmen, muss man die Grundbegriffe, mit denen wir unsere Praxis denken â und das heiÃt seit der Moderne vornehmlich: die Begriffe des Subjekts und der Autonomie â, anders und neu denken. Das Subjekt kann nicht nur Instanz autonomer Aktivität sein, es muss zugleich als Instanz der Bestimmbarkeit durch das unverfügbar Entgegenkommende gedacht werden. Es reicht aber nicht, das Subjekt innerlich zu dialektisieren. Dem Widerfahrnischarakter des Gelingens eignet eine theologische Dimension, die den Begriff des Subjekts in den Horizont einer Theologie der Gnade stellt. Diesen Weg von einer kontingenz-sensiblen philosophischen Subjekttheorie zu einer subjektsensiblen Theologie der Gnade lotet das Buch argumentativ aus.

The subject cannot only be an instance of autonomous activity, it must at the same time be thought of as an instance of determinability through the unavailably accommodating.
