This volume includes one dozen new and recent essays on John Steinbeckâs East of Eden (1952). First commissioned by the late Professor Michael J. Meyer, a renowned Steinbeck scholar, the volume was originally designed to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the novelâs publication. The collection contains critical writings from a variety of literary fields. These include the biographical essay, travel essay, essays on varied themes in Steinbeckâs works, writings on critical approaches to Steinbeck and also a new essay on Elia Kazanâs film adaptation of the novel. This volume is of interest for the Steinbeck scholar, the literary critic and also the casual reader seeking new ways to understand Steinbeckâs novel.
âDue to the diverse topics and, for the most part academic, essays, East of Eden: New and Recent Essays serves as a tool for Steinbeck scholars looking for new arguments and critical analyses as well as a primer and supplemental text to those new to Steinbeckâs work. This book could be used to help an Intro to Steinbeck class understand some of the unique themes or conversations taking place around EoE. It could also serve as a starting-point to a study in setting or allegory, as several of the essays inside touch on those elements of fiction.â - Eric W. Riddle, Weber State University, in: Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature 69.1 (2015), pp. 107-109
