The 14 papers in this volume were first presented at the Fifth International Galen Colloqium held in Lille in 1995 and represent a first attempt to explore systematically this vast complicated area. Armelle Debru is Professor of Classics at the University of Lille in France. She is a specialist in ancient Greek medicine. She has published Le Corps Respirant. La Pensée Physiologique chez Galien ( Brill, 1996).
