Linnaeus acquired specimens from Virginia, the West Indies and Central America when he was in the Netherlands and England in 1735-1738. By 1753 his herbarium also included many specimens from the South of France and elsewhere in Europe; from Siberia; Coastal China and India; South-Eastern Canada; New York and Pennsylvania which were sent to him by correspondents and former students.
