Abstract
Ecology has to do with the realisation of the relationships between human beings and the larger fabric of life. But the strangeness of the Australian environment as seen by the first European settlers, together with the exploitative ideology of colonisation, have posed particular problems for the development of ecological awareness. This paper argues, however, that writers, painters and musicians have kept the possibility of developing ecological awareness open from the beginnings of settlement. It also maintains that increasing sensitivity to the significance of Aboriginal culture, the oldest living culture on earth, will be perhaps the most crucial factor in this transformation.
