Images, Freedom, and the Unrealizable in The Coming of Age

Abstract
This article attends to Beauvoir’s concept of the image in The Coming of Age, Les Belles Images, and A Walk through the Land of Old Age. The author argues that the experience of being an older adult emerges primarily from the available social images of old age rather than from the aging body. This view reveals problems with the discourse around older people that fueled the COVID-19 care home crisis and that persist in our response to the crisis.

Cet article s’intéresse au concept de l’image tel que Beauvoir le développe dans La Vieillesse, Les Belles Images et Promenade au pays de la vieillesse. L’auteur soutient que l’expérience d’une personne âgée est davantage informée par les images du troisième âge en circulation dans la société que par le vieillissement du corps. Ce point de vue révèle des aspects problématiques du discours sur les personnes âgées qui a nourri la crise touchant les résidences pour aîné.e.s pendant la pandémie de COVID-19 et continue de se faire entendre aujourd’hui.
