Abstract
This paper argues that in Lââ¯Invitée and in The Second Sex, Black presence, especially âBlack female presence,â functions as the fundamental field against which White female consciousnesses are able to make sense of themselves as subjects and objects in their relationships with Others, including when the Others are themselves. Considering The Second Sex and Lââ¯Invitée as together providing Beauvoirâs understanding of gender allows for an account of how âBlack female presenceââin the form of the White imaginaryâs idea of Black womenâis present and operational in The Second Sex.

Cet article soutient que, dans Lââ¯Invitée et dans Le Deuxième Sexe, la présence noire, particulièrement «Black female presence», constitue lââ¯horizon fondamental contre lequel les consciences féminines blanches se comprennent elles-mêmes comme sujets et objets dans leur relation aux Autres, y compris lorsque les Autres sont en elles-mêmes. Lire ensemble Le Deuxième Sexe et Lââ¯Invitée en tant quââ¯ils éclairent la compréhension beauvoirienne du genre permet dââ¯expliquer comment «Black female presence»âsous la forme de lââ¯idée de la «femme noire» dans lââ¯imaginaire des Blancsâest opératoire dans Le Deuxième Sexe.
