Abstract
In this article Ise Jingu, Japan, and the church of St Michael, Germany, are juxtaposed. At first glance they do not seem to have much in common, except that they exist as a testimony to the intentions of the original builders who established their distinctive architectural traditions and, physically, both are recent reconstructions. The reasons for their reconstruction are different because, whereas the Ise precincts are renewed as it were in obedience to a sacred injunction at a place where war never occurred, the renewal of the Hildesheim church to its original design is predominantly the result of circumstance and the vicissitudes of devastation, plunder and war.
