Abstract
Students and faculty concerned with the ongoing genocide in Gaza, assaults on the West Bank, and critical of Israeli policy are being met with false accusations of antisemitism and repressive pushback and suppression from their universities as well as national US leaders. The repression is more aggressive than in earlier conflicts and includes the weaponization of false accusations of antisemitism generated both by students and organized local and national groups that are part of a racist, right-wing political swing in this country. The meaning of antisemitism, a bigotry grounded in white, racist, fascistic movements that tend to hate Jews, people of color, women, lgbtqi+ folk, immigrants, and Muslims, has been distorted beyond recognition. Zionism is being conflated with Jewish identity and falsely held as a protected status. Foreign born students, Arabs, and Muslims are particularly under attack and at risk for deportation. This raises serious challenges to freedom of speech and the integrity of academic institutions.
