Abstract

This article provides a brief historicization and theorization of the 2024 United Auto Workers Local 4811 (uaw 4811) strike by academic workers at the University of California (uc) organized in response to the brutal assaults on pro-Palestine student encampments by counter protestors and university municipal, and state police agencies. We contextualize the relationship of the US labor movement, and the uaw, to Palestine and narrate the actions taken by uaw locals at the uc following October 7, 2023, as well as situating these locations within the broader movement for Palestinian liberation. We argue that the mass labor organizing model undertaken by uaw 4811 in 2024 offers a demonstrably viable avenue for mobilizing workers at scale in support of causes beyond the narrow definition of the “workplace” and thus opens possible approaches for democratically redefining the political potential of American labor.
