Abstract
In the Musée des Beaux-Arts at Lille there are two shutters from a North-Netherlandish commemorative painting (fig. 2/3) which on comparison with two others in the museums at Valenciennes (fig. i) and La Fère may be attributed to the painter Aertgen van Leyden. The coats of arms painted on the outsides of the shutters (fig-4/5) identify the sitters as Claes Alewijn Claeszz., burgomaster of Leiden (d. 1561), and his wife Anna Cornelisdr. van der Hooch (d.1558) with their children. The whereabouts of the central panel are unknown, but the work must have been painted for the Pieterskerk in Leiden, where the same couple's tombstone, made by the Frisian carver Pieter Dircksz., still is (fig. 6).
