Abstract
This article focusses on Dutch women as commissioners of architecture between 1680 and 1800 and especially on women from the merchant’s classes. Its aim is to demonstrate that women – despite their status of being legally incapacitated – were able to erect some of the most stupendous canal houses in Amsterdam. This seems to be a contrast with English noble women during the Georgian period. Female propriety was translated into piety, or humility, charity and virtue, resulting in a more modest kind of architecture. Dutch merchant’s women were not subdued by these notions at all: their houses rank among the most ornamented and richest houses in Holland.
