Abstract

Adriana Perez (1568–1619), an affluent woman from Antwerp, who belonged to a prosperous family of Spanish merchants, was the wife of burgomaster Nicolaas Rockox for 30 years. While her husband is celebrated for his patronage of Peter Paul Rubens and for his enviable collection of paintings, sculptures, coins, and books, evidence of Perez’s interventions can be found throughout the Rockox Collection. This article analyzes Perez’s marriage contract, will, two portraits, and the inscription that she contributed to Rockox’s friendship book to bring the elite lady out from her husband’s shadow and to place her at his side as a companion and partner. By reexamining her biography and the married couple’s shared commissions and collection, this paper investigates Adriana Perez’s roles as a co-patron of and audience for the artworks that she and her husband purchased and displayed in their household and over their tomb.
