The evidence from the Konya Plain Survey Project suggests significant population increase in the Konya Plain during the Early Byzantine period. This and evidence relating to drainage, manuring and the settlement of locally less productive zones indicates a high intensity of land use and a degree of pressure on the landscape. The vulnerability of this system to disruption is highlighted and possible factors underlying expansion and intensive landscape use are raised. Survey evidence also reveals the substantial growth of some rural sites possibly in connection with church building. This appears not to correlate with simple economic processes but may be the outcome of social and political decisions.
