This article investigates the ways in which contemporary theologians can make use of the pre-Constantinian Christian opinions on warfare. It enters into dialogue with early Christian theologians and highlights several theological arguments that prove to be relevant today. The notion of inner spiritual warfare proves to be an effective way of reflecting on one’s own engagement in earthly military activities. In addition, the early Christian conviction that fallen supernatural beings stand behind wars encourages contemporary theologians to unmask and battle against the root causes of human conflicts. According to the early fathers, the calling of the church in relation to war is to preach the gospel of peace and live out its implications in its own social life.
