This study explores the impact of five drying technologies – sun drying (SD), hybrid solar-electric drying (HSED), vacuum freeze drying (VFD), greenhouse drying (GD), and microwave drying (MD) – on the quality of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL). Key parameters, including yield, specific energy consumption, drying rate, and various nutritional, physicochemical, techno-functional, structural, and thermal properties, were analysed for each method. VFD, while being the most effective at preserving nutrients and structure with a yield of 37.5%, required high energy (206.86 kWh/kg) and extended drying times (72 h), limiting its scalability. Conversely, HSED, with a lower energy consumption (1.62 kWh/kg) and shorter drying time (6 h), offered a sustainable balance of efficiency and product quality suitable for large-scale use. In contrast, GD resulted in the highest nutrient losses and structural degradation. The findings guide the selection of effective and sustainable drying methods for producing high-quality BSFL for food and feed applications.
