Abstract

A sample of 226 students attending seminaries, theological colleges and bible schools, representing a wide range of denominations and church traditions in the United Kingdom, completed the Religious Status Inventory, an instrument designed to assess 'religious maturity'. The data were employed to develop short ten-item forms of the eight scales by means of which this instrument conceptualises religious maturity: awareness of God; acceptance of God's grace and steadfast love; being repentant and responsible; knowing God's leadership and direction; involvement in organised religion; experiencing fellowship; being ethical; and affirming openness in faith. The short scales are commended for further application and examination on the grounds that they are more reliable than the longer instruments, less burdensome to complete, and a more adequate operationalisation of the underlying constructs. Since the definition of religious maturity operationalised by the Religious Status Inventory properly remains controversial, the challenge is also issued for the development of new and alternative measures.
