Abstract

The present article is a study of the Danube salt monopoly with a particular focus on the relationship between Miša Anastasijević, a Serbian merchant-cum-statesman, and the Ottoman Empire. It elaborates on the Danube salt monopoly as a case in which the Serbian merchant and the Ottoman government cooperated to maintain trade in an imperial realm with a nationalised framework. Investigating the extent of Ottoman protectionism, this study argues that the Danube salt monopoly notwithstanding its ultimate surrender to the liberal principles constitutes an illuminative case of protectionism, which contributed to the making of Ottoman economic nationalism
