In classical Arabic literature, adab and history are closely related. Collections such as al-MasʿūdÄ«âs MurÅ«j al-dhahab, Ibn Qutaybaâs KitÄb al-MaÊ¿Ärif or the MuÊ¿jam al-buldÄn by YÄqÅ«t are proper hybrids of history and adab: History often includes adab approaches, and adab regularly incorporates historical akhbÄr. The multivolume encyclopedia al-Ê¿Iqd al-farÄ«d, âthe Unique Necklace,â composed by the AndalusÄ« Ibn Ê¿Abd Rabbih (246/860-328/940) fits very well into the adab ideal of cultural broadness. In addition to numerous historical anecdotes, the Ê¿Iqd al-farÄ«d incorporates a lengthy and very peculiar monographic section on caliphal history, an early example of history in adab. These passages have received little attention in the study of early Arabic historiography so far; however, they definitely deserve a closer investigation.

Khalidi, Historical Thought, 90, 91. In Classical Arabic literature, adab has proved to be a very elusive cultural term; seemingly, it reflects at the same time a certain moral attitude, an elitist cultural program, a sophisticated etiquette, a literary style and a literary genre. See for a survey of current definitions, Fähndrich, Der Begriff and Bonebakker, Adab. The frequent translation as âBelles-Lettresâ is not accurate since it does not reflect the various dimensions of adab. Khalidi, Historical Thought, 83 compares adab with Greek âpaideia.â
