A new species of mite, Smaris pinus (Acari: Smarididae), is described from Cyprus. The adults and deutonymphs of the new species were found in association with the Israeli pine bast scale, Matsucoccus josephi Bodenheimer & Harpaz (Homoptera: Margarodidae) on pine trees (Pinus brutia Ten.) during April 1993. Samples of mites revealed a 2:1 female—dominated sex ratio. Sexual dimorphism in external morphology in adults is described. This paper comprises the first report of Smaris from Cyprus. The biology of Smaris also is discussed.
