Of the fourteen species of spiny mice of the genus Acomys currently recognized (Wilson and Reeder, 1993), nine (cineraceus, ignitus, kempi, louisae, mullah, percivali, spinosissimus, subspinosus, and wilsoni) are restricted to Africa, and three (cilicicus, minous, and nesiotes) to Eurasia; cahirinus and russatus have geographic ranges that extend into both continents. A list of synonymies of each species is included and the distributions mapped in detail.
