There has been much discussion about the reasons why Australian mammals have declined in the past 200 years. However, the effect of this decline on the genetic makeup of individuals and populations has been poorly documented. I attempt to redress this deficiency by outlining how population genetics may be applied to the management of threatened species in Australia. The example of the brush-tailed bettong Bettongia penicillata is used.
