The effects of a wild fire on birds and rodents in a phryganic ecosystem of Greece were studied.
The fire imposed considerable effects regarding the composition of avifauna, reducing the number of resident and overwintering species (which feed mostly on shrub canopies) in favour of the summer visitors (mostly ground feeders). Rodents were also affected very much. Of the three rodent species caught in the unburnt site, only one was found after the fire. There was also a species caught only in the burnt site, though in small numbers.
Finally, an attempt was made to relate the changes imposed by the fire to the relevant changes of vegetation characteristics.
