Specimens of the scolecithricid copepod Macandrewella chelipes (Giesbrecht, 1896) from the Gulf of Elat (Gulf of 'Aqaba), Red Sea, are examined so as to supplement the description of the species, and to compare it to specimens of Scottocalanus securifrons (T. Scott, 1894) collected off southeast Brazil. The genera Macandrewella A. Scott and Scolecocalanus Farran share between them and with Scottocalanus Sars most of the characters used so far in the generic diagnoses. The three genera are now tentatively separated by a combination of the following characters: crested or uncrested forehead with or without a lens-shaped structure, and presence or absence of female fifth legs.
