LIFE CYCLE AND REPRODUCTION OF GAMMARUS AEQUICAUDA (CRUSTACEA: AMPHIPODA) IN THE EVROS DELTA (NE GREECE)

Life cycle and reproduction of Gammarus aequicauda (Martynov, 1931), an especially euryapte amphipod of the Mediterranean lagoons, were investigated during 13 months in a poly—to euhaline area of the Evros Delta (northeastern Greece). The population of this species was sexually active throughout the year and had two reproductive peaks. The life cycle is based on two generations per year and the sex ratio shows a preponderance of males. The brood size was a linear function of the volume or weight of the female with strong seasonal variation in the mean. The annual mean brood size was high in comparison to other multiple-brooded gammaridean amphipods, possibly a result of the large size.
