This investigation summarises studies performed during a period of 14 months on cryptic invertebrate communities living on the algae Jania rubens. Ulva lactuca, Acanthophora nayadiformes and Sargassum sp. dominating the shallow rocky subtidal and infratidal of the Mediterranean coast of Israel. During this study, 29 monthly samples were collected, with a total of 39,731 animal individuals belonging to 175 taxa. Dominant were Amphipoda (30 species), Mollusca (63 species) and Polychaeta (41 species). Among the collected species, the following were the most abundant: Amphithoe ramondi, Hyale schmidti, Elasmopus pectinicrus, Grubia hirsuta (Amphipoda), Rissoa similis, Rissoa sp., Seria turriculata (Gastropoda), Mytilaster minimus, Musculus costulatus (Bivalvia), Brania davala, Plaiynereis dumerilii, Typosyllis prolifera, Branchiosyllis exilis, Brania oculata. Laeospira sp., Fabricia sabella, Polyophthalmus pictus (Polychaeta). Also common were two species of harpacticoid copepods; one species of Isopoda of the genus Sphaeroma, two species ot Foraminifera and two flatworms. The highest species diversity was found on Acanthophora nayadiformes and the lowest on Sargassum sp. Most of the abundant species were more common on Jania rubens and A. nayadiformes, than on Ulva lactuca and Sargassum sp., For each algal species typical guilds of epifaunal species were observed. It seems that the thallus-structure of the algae and availability of nourishment on the host plant are the reasons for such differences. Comparing the affinities between samples, it was found that those from the same algal species are of 65% affinity. Seasonal changes in the algal cover on the investigated site caused subtle seasonal changes in the algal epifauna.
