Preliminary studies on the benthos of the northern end of the Gulf of Elat (Akaba) furnished data concerning the main living communities down to about 740 m. Seven communities have been thus delimited: 1. the intertidal Hippa community; 2. the in-fralittoral Lovenia-Mactra community; 3. the Halophila meadows; 4. the shell and gravel bottoms with Foraminifera; 5. the Turritella community; 6. the Palaeostoma-Hyalinoecia community; 7. the Pteropode ooze community.
The conclusions are divided into those which are applicable to the investigated area and those probably valid for the whole Red Sea. Two facts are especially emphasized: the presence of a regular succession of bottom communities, despite the lack of a decreasing temperature gradient with increasing depth; the presence in the deepest bottoms, of a fairly varied fauna of the usual bathyal character.
