The leishmanias which exist in two forms: an intracellular, aflagellar form in the vertebrate host and a leptomonad form in cultures, provide ideal material for the study of the development of a flagellum ab initio.

A brief account is given of the development of the flagellum in Leishmania sp. in both normal cultures and in cultures on medium containing homologous serum.

It is suggested that these are promising subjects for electron microscope studies.
