NOTES ON A NEW SUBSPECIES OF BOLBOPHORUS CONFUSUS (KRAUSE, 1914) DUBOIS 1935 (TREMATODA, DIPLOSTOMATIDAE), A FISH-TRANSMITTTED BIRD PARASITE

Bolbophorus confusas levantinas, n. subsp., a new diplostomid subspecies from the intestine of Ardea purpurea is described. The snail Bulinus truncatus has been found capable of serving as intermediate host for this parasite. A 24-hour periodicity was observed in the shedding of the furcocercous cercariae of the trematode by infested snails. The cercariae were found to encyst in the muscles of Tilapia nilotica only. Upon penetration into the muscles of the host fish, the cercariae develop into metacercariae which undergo further morphological changes from a mobile Distomatoid to the typical encysted Strigeid type. Massive infestation with metacercariae may be lethal to the fish.
