Zoeae of the prawn Palaemon elegans forma elegans of Israel's coasts were reared to post-larval stage I, and were found to resemble zoeae caught in the coastal waters.

The salinity of the water in which the zoeae were grown varied in the different rearing series. Supporting evidence was found for the influence of salinity on the number of zoeal stages in the ontogenesis.

Differences in morphology, rate of growth and number of larval stages are described and discussed in comparison with the northern forms. Likewise, influence of salinity and temperature on the development of the zoeae are discussed.
