Abstract

The initiation liturgy in Manichaeism usually consisted of the so-called Five Mysteries. In contrast to this, an anointing with oil is reported in some places. The present article considers this irregular finding by first examining the liturgical transformations of Mani and his early followers. In a further step, the notes on the initiatory anointing are analyzed and classified as a reception of the Syrian tradition about the apostle Thomas. Manichaeism was thus able to adapt a ritual that appeared acceptable in a Christian context, particularly in the case of competing missions—and at the same time it reveals the connections with the Syriac Christianity of the Persian Empire.
