Abstract

This paper offers a new etymology for the divine name attested in Pahlavi as Tīr. Its basis is a calque on the most salient feature of the iconography of the Mesopotamian god Nabû, on whom the Iranian god (*Tiriya) was modeled in the Achaemenid period.
