The paper describes expressions with the meaning âotherâ in East Caucasian (Nakh-Daghestanian) languages. It is shown that four main strategies can be distinguished: i) the âoneâ-based strategy: âotherâ includes the numeral âoneâ; ii) the demonstrative-based strategy: âotherâ includes a demonstrative pronoun; iii) the mixed demonstrative-based + âoneâ- based strategy: âotherâ includes both a demonstrative and the numeral âoneâ; and iv) the lexical strategy: âotherâ is a dedicated adjective (pronoun), not necessarily derived from any other clearly discernable source.
