Abstract

In 1565 the Strasbourg Gymnasium experienced a profound crisis. Rector Sturm contributed this to the lack of understanding of the method he had developed approximately 30 years prior. Thus, Sturm inspected teaching lessons and distributed detailed recommendation letters to teachers. These letters, called the Classicae Epistolae, represent a hybrid genre: as didactic letters they convey a pedagogic-methodical content, while they also contain protreptic elements with Sturm’s calls to implement his recommendations.
