Die Melusine des Thüring von Ringoltingen (1456) gehört zu den populären Lesestoffen seit dem ausgehenden Mittelalter. Erstmals 1473/74 gedruckt, sind allein für das 15. und 16. Jahrhundert ca. 30 Ausgaben überliefert. Sämtliche Drucke sind umfangreich illustriert, wobei rund zwölf eigens angefertigte Holzschnittzyklen sowohl mehrfach verwendet als auch variiert wurden. Der Beitrag betrachtet die Überlieferung in einer breit angelegten Untersuchung erstmals in ihren Zusammenhängen und ermöglicht es, nach der Relation von Bild und Text, nach Darstellungskonventionen wie auch Erzählhaltungen der Illustrationen zu fragen.
