Sebastian Franckâs 1534 publication Die Vier Kronbüchlein uses Erasmusâ Moriae Encomium and Agrippaâs De incertitudine et vanitatem scientiarum to launch a polemic against natural reason. He deploys commentary, marginalia and translation to recast the works of Erasmus and Agrippa in the image of his own inner word spriritualism, and denounce the false knowledge and wisdom of the scholarly world of his day. Set together with two short works by Franck, Die Vier Kronbüchlein throws in relief Franckâs unique hermeneutic of the inner Word and the various ways dissent was practiced during the era of incipient confessionalization.
