Abstract

The behaviour of male Three-spined Sticklebacks in a stretch of the River Wear in Durham City is described. Quantitative data on parental behaviour and the effects of creeping through agreed closely with data collected under laboratory conditions. A decrease in territory size during the parental phase was noted. Nest raiding and egg stealing were also observed. Circling and dorsal-pricking were important components of courtship behaviour.
