Abstract
Neonatal ducklings which do not distinguish between a particular imprinting surrogate and some other model, may be able to learn to discriminate between the two with heat as reenforcement. When the reenforcement is a drink of water, some pairs of models are discriminated, but not others; there is no concordancy between discriminability in this and the imprinting context. The peculiar effectiveness of certain imprinting surrogates can therefore not be attributed to the sensory capacities of the ducklings.
