The main topic this paper discusses is ləʔ hε used after the main verb in sentences of Shanghai dialect. Previous studies concerning ləʔ hε are reviewed first, then some characteristics of ləʔ hε are explored. The following views are reached: 1. In the construction “V + ləʔ hε + O”, if O does not indicate a location, then ləʔ hε cannot form a V-O relationship with O, and the construction is well-formed. 2. If O indicates a location, then ləʔ hε can form a V-O relationship with O, and “V + ləʔ hε + O” is ill-formed. Why is the construction “V + ləʔ hε + O” in the second condition ill-formed? The reason is that the transitivity transmitted from V to O is obstructed by the weak objective characteristic of hε in ləʔ hε, but not by the remnant meaning of location that hε still holds now.
