Abstract

The reference to Israel in the Merneptah stele plays a pivotal role in the debate on Israelâs emergence in Late Bronze-Iron Age Palestine. Most scholars ignore âthe plain sense of the textâ which suggests that Israel has been wiped out. Recent research on ethnicity undermines the essentialist notion that there is a direct connection between Merneptahâs âIsraelâ and later entities of the same name. The article explores the implications of accepting the claim of Merneptahâs scribes that âIsraelâ had been destroyed
