Abstract

This chapter opens with an overview of the creation of the English Province (and subsequently the Irish and Scottish Provinces), its activities, the disbanding of the province under Henry VIII, and its brief restitution under Mary I. This is followed by a survey of the history of scholarly engagement with the medieval English Dominican Province. The penultimate section provides the rationale underlying the different sections of the book, and brief introductions to the individual chapters. The chapter closes with a full list of medieval Dominican foundations across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
