Summary

Despite attempts during the earlier half of the 16th century to establish surgical training for medical students at German universities, it was not before the end of the century that a graduation in surgery became possible in some places. Through a detailed analysis of a series of doctoral dissertations on surgical themes held in Basel between 1583 and 1609, I am going to show how this change in the medical curriculum came about and who its protagonists were. Moreover, I will explain why these doctores chirurgiae, together with their surgical training, were to remain a short-lived episode in Northern European university history for a long time afterwards.
