Loss and suffering are stereotypically the rubric of Blues. Blues texts do not avoid suffering but rather seek a way through it. Using a framework developed from Thomas Mooreâs Care of the Soul, this chapter reviews a selection of Blues artists that deal with illness and its affects. Like analogues in Moore, I suggest that Blues artists find a form of healing through care instead of cure. Using general knowledge about the Blues and specific transcribed texts, the content of this chapter is intended as illustration of The Music, Art, and Ethics of Suffering by Raymond De Vries in this volume. According to De Vries, the field of bioethics has largely avoided looking directly at the meaning(s) of suffering. By contrast, the Blues look directly at suffering with the intent of transformation.
