Abstract

Ash scattering is a relatively new social institution where some people want to have their ashes scattered in the wind. Sometimes this is combined with various kinds of experienced contact between the deceased and persons left behind. This is an ethnographic study based on in-depth interviews with ten bereaved persons in Norway who scattered the ashes of deceased relatives. The study also included visits to the places where the interviewees had scattered the ashes. This ritual seems to be non-official and including a narrow circle of relatives and friends. Quietness, body postures, activating of thoughts and senses near the ash-scattering sites seem to evoke the subjectively felt appearances of the dead and stimulate the continuing relationship. Some of the informants have been looking for alternatives to Christian rituals, while others do not see their practices as being at variance with Christianity. The author recommends more studies seeing religion in unexpected places.
