Abstract

This chapter is based on current research on Latin merchants and nobles in the papal curia during the 14th century who petitioned the popes for commercial exemptions (trade licenses) that would allow them to trade in the Islamic world, in contravention of the papal embargo. Among the many who received these privileges, those connected to Cyprus are especially prominent and are the focus here. The recipients include merchants, clergy, nobles and rulers of the island. The exemptions survive in the papal archives, and many are unpublished. They tell us a great deal about trading connections between Famagusta and the Mamluk empire, as well as about the prominence of individuals from Cyprus and Famagusta at the papal court. Because Latin trade with Muslims was illegal according to papal law, it is not always easy to identify the individuals who participated in this trade and the details of their commercial actions. Famagusta and, more widely, Cyprus were renowned as a hub for East-West trade, and the present chapter strives to shed light on the activities of individuals from Cyprus via these papal trade exemptions.
