Abstract:

Early in his career, John Chrysostom composed a number of apologetic treatises. Two of these, Virg. and Bab., are addressed on the one hand to primarily Christian detractors of virginity and on the other hand to a broader audience regarding the events of Julianâs removal of the relics of the martyr Babylas. In these treatises appear his only two quotations from Platoâs Timaeus. By analysing their form and comparing their contexts with their appearance in Eusebius of Caesareaâs Praeparatio, it is argued that Chrysostom excerpted from books 4â6 and 10â11 as his source for his Timaeus quotations. This chapter considers the rhetorical purposes of Chrysostomâs placing himself within the Eusebian apologetic tradition, showing how questions of the Creatorâs envy (Virg. 8; Tim. 29e) and the âraceâ of men destined to embody the most ancient kind of wisdom (Bab. 80; Tim. 22b) were utilised by Chrysostom in negotiating a âtextual communityâ amongst Christians and loyal Hellenists alike.
