In his work Contra Eunomium Gregory of Nyssa is quoting long passages from the work of Eunomius of Cyzicus Ὑπὲρ τῆς ἀπολογίας ἀπολογία. This article examines the way in which the vocabulary of Eunomius becomes part of Gregory’s work. The examples selected here (ἀνωτάτω, ἄνω, συντάττω, ὑποτάττω, παραλλάττω, ἀγεννησία) indicate that Eunomius’ vocabulary is not alien to Gregory’s lexis. Although Gregory strongly criticises Eunomius’ style and diction it becomes evident that both authors, Gregory and Eunomius, can be considered outstanding representatives of late classical Greek literature. The lexical analysis of Gregory’s and Eunomius’ work is influenced by the research for the Lexicon Gregorianum and at the end of the article it is illustrated how the vocabulary of Eunomius will be dealt with in the Lexicon Gregorianum. In this contribution for the Colloquium that took place in 1986 the Lexicon Gregorianum was announced as a provisional computer printout. In the meantime, it has been completed and the nine volumes of the Lexicon Gregorianum, Wörterbuch zu den Schriften Gregors von Nyssa were published by Brill (Leiden 1999–2013).
